THROTTLED!!!

Mark your calendar for Oct. 8th 2011 for COMUNE/Drop City contributor Ray Gordon’s photography exhibit titled “THROTTLED”!
Ray Gordon’s THROTTLED presents an intimate look at people that build and celebrate traditional hot rods and vintage motorcycles. The twenty-five or so large-scale color images tell stories of hitting the gas and having a laugh. Gordon takes us to the places where he is at home: drag strips, custom bike shops and secret forts where guys with grease under their fingernails seduce beautiful girls that know better but can’t resist the promise of danger. Way more than a peek under the hood, THROTTLED invites one and all to a way of life that’s as simple and fun as a fast ride, good friends and a couple of beers.

Ray Gordon has been a professional photographer for over one thousand years, working with all sorts of spoiled brats, goldbrickers and filthy rich desperadoes. He’s really f*ing rad, if you’ve got an hour, just ask him. In spite of being a tireless blowhard, he’s got a lot of great friends and an incredible family and as you can see he takes a pretty good picture. A noisy dragstrip is one of the few places he finds peace of mind.

It probably helps to know where it is at, well here you go,

TREND TUESDAYS!!

DENIM 2.0

Last week we tapped into my deep appreciation for shoes, but Denim is my true passion. It's as American as apple pie but of course, the Italians do it best (very biased opinion of course). Here is a quick guide into picking the right styles of denim without getting too "techy"...for now at least!

THE CUT:
The cut of your denim defines who you are. Are you a classic comfort fit or are you an ultra modern skinny fit kinda guy?! It's your call but which ever style you choose, make sure to buy the right size. Typically you should buy your denim a half to full size small. Any premium denim will stretch almost immediately.

THE WASH:
The wash of your denim dictates the time of year and the occasion. Typically, a lighter wash is worn during the warmer season's as well as more casual settings. Whereas, you will see darker and less distresses for Fall/Winter and formal settings.

THE DENIM:
Your choices don't just stop with cut and wash. The type of denim, in my opinion, is the most crucial aspect and in many cases, the first thing I look for in making my selection. I want to focus on "selvage" denim. Selvage denim is a type of denim, which forms a clean natural edge that does not unravel. It is commonly presented in the unwashed or raw state. Typically, the selvage edges will be located along the out-seam of the pants, making it visible when cuffs are worn. Selvage is desirable because the edge cannot fray like denim made on a projectile loom (selvage denim is made on a shuttle loom) that has separate wefts, which leave an open edge that must be stitched. Pretty much, it's the most durable way to weave denim and therefore the price is inflated as well.

I hope that this quick tutorial to denim 2.0 helps you think a little more next time you shop for your next pair of new jeans.  We'll get a little deeper into styling a little later in the season. "Till then, keep us posted on all your new denim finds!!!

Ed Templeton

Skateboarding was a huge part of my life growing up.  Like many of you that skate or skated I grew up watching guys like Ed Templeton kill it.

Well, not only is Ed Templeton a phenomenal skater, but he is quite the artist as well.  Ed started his artistic career by painting the graphics for the skateboard company he started called Toy Machine.  He has since put out a book of his photography called Teenage Smokers, been featured in Juxtapoz magazine, and is co-editor of ANP Quarterly.

In 2008, after eleven years of selection and research, Ed published Deformer.  Deformer is the summary of Ed's personality as an artist.  What's also rad about Ed is he grew locally in Huntington Beach, and has helped our local art scene grow.

TREND TUESDAYS

It's that time again! And for you that know me...i love me some shoes. Fall is the perfect "shoe season". We pack up our flippy's and easy kicks and start breaking out the heavy hitters. i was just reviewing Esquire's Fall 2011 style guide and fell in love with some of the different categories. Here are some of my favorite featured shoes, from "wear to work" to "out on the town"

 Jon Lobb: "William Boot" $1,625

 Grenson: "Jarmon Low":$375

 Church's: Brown Wingtip: $1,080

 Red Wing: "Logger Boot"

Shipley&Homes: "Lucian Oxford": $325

Now I know that some of these styles are a little out of the price range for most of us, but let these styles inspire your selections into something a little more affordable; I know I sure am!

WELCOME

We wanted to take this time to say Thank You and Welcome to all our new friends and family who are now part of the Product Me family. We started this blog not just as a tool to showcase some of our favorite designers, artists, musicians, etc; but rather, to create an open forum for all of you who follow this blog. In the words of Uncle Sam, "We Need You"! We need you, the followers, to help influence this site with your likes, dis-likes, favorites, ideas, what it is that makes you....well you.  So let us know what artists you want to see and what bands and musicians you are listening to.  We want to know what brands you guys are buying or think that are worthy of buying as well as any rad events or happenings that you think we should know about.  Product Me is a reflection of everything that encompasses our personalities, styles, and representations of ourselves and we want this site to evolve just as we ALL evolve daily. This isn't just a "guys" site. We all know, ladies, that men are highly influenced by the way you think and how you like a man to dress, so your opinions and feedback are ever more important! Again we say Thank You! We hope that we can become one of the many influences in your daily lives because we are relying on you to influence us as well, and remember there cannot be a Product Me without YOU!

THVM

THVM, pronounced as “them”, was founded in Los Angeles, CA in 2009.

THVM is a collective of creative minded people dedicated to designing and producing quality premium denim at an affordable price. THVM’s principals are based in the collaboration and relationship with multi-disciplinary arts. The brand’s aesthetic aim is to create sophisticated and refined designs, while being accessible to a wide audience. Simplicity is the core of the basics collection, allowing an individual to express their style and personality without the interference of over embellishment.

In cunjunction with each seasonal collection, THVM also produces a magazine, THVM Rag, that celebrates the creative process. The goal of the magazine is to reveal innovative movements at a local and global level, while providing unique perspectives on established artists and creative personas. THVM Rag serves as a platform to share the inspirations and methodologies that reflect the design of the seasonal collection.

Based in Los Angeles, CA, the offices of THVM are housed in a century old factory that is home to a collective of artists, designers and musicians. The collective group works side by side, each in their own disciplines, and shares insight into the creative process. THVM hosts events that showcase local artists and performers and opens it’s studios to the public on a regular basis.

The interaction with diverse creative minds feeds the design of the collection, resulting in fresh and progressive styles originating from exploration. The washes may derive from the subtle grain of a photograph or the finish of a sculptural installation. The cuts may be inspired by the angular crescendo of a musical score and the movement from an accompanied dance.

The core identity and inspiration for THVM is to share and celebrate the wonders, struggles, and beauty of the creative process.
"Above info about THVM taken from their website at THVM"

This seasons color palette was taken from an enlarged image of someones eye.  They actually took a picture of someones eye in the office and blew it up.  All the colors produced were drawn from the many colors visible in that persons eye.  This company is producing really clean and affordable garments all made just up the road from us in Los Angeles.  Check out more of their collection and bi-annual magazine at THVM.

TREND TUESDAYS

So one of my favorite American, mainstream designers today is Billy Reid. What Billy showcases through his work are classic American styles with today's modern touch. He truly dresses today's gentlemen with whispers of the past while still innovating today's fashion trends. Don't belive me....hear it for yourself
